We all have the best of intentions to work on our photo projects, right? But it’s sometimes a struggle to stay motivated and on track (even for me)! Personally, I have found music to be a motivator. We’ve started a group of like minded photo enthusiasts called PixJourney because we know there are always more photos to save. We are thrilled to announce our Pixologie’s Photos & Memories Playlist on Spotify.
Whether you have printed or digital pictures or other types of media (slides, negatives, memorabilia, etc) to preserve, these songs might be the key you need to get to work.
Sorting and Saving Photos Should Be Enjoyable
I think working with photos should be fun and enjoyable, but I know people who dread the task – like a friend who prefers to clean bathrooms instead of working with her pictures and a client who mentioned she needed to take a Xanax before coming to us for help!
Certainly, going through old photos can bring a wide range of emotions. And, when coupled with the music I’ve chosen, you just might need tissue so grab your Kleenex bag.
However, if you can get through the initial shock of visiting memory lane, you may find it therapeutic to start digging in to your photo projects. I love the thoughts shared by Harvard Business Review’s Clay Routledge who recently wrote about the power of nostalgia. He reported that when people engage in nostalgia, they are remembering meaningful life events shared with others. It’s not just a happy trip down memory lane but can also involve negative and positive emotions. But, “it tends to follow a redemptive sequence in which negative feelings such as longing and loss give way to positive feelings such as happiness, social connectedness, gratitude, and hope.”
I totally identify with this as I feel better after a good emotional cry! : )
It’s Time to Save Our Memories!
I will always advocate that people should take time to go through old photos and make sure the memories, stories and legacies are saved. So, with that being said, let’s dive in to our Spotify Photos & Memories Playlist! I’m going to work backwards.

Country Songs
I’ll admit it that this is not my favorite genre of music. This is why they are at the end of our playlist. If these songs were shuffled in with the other ones, I would enjoy the variety.
30. Fool Hearted Memory by George Strait
29. Camera by Crosby, Stills and Nash
28. Middle of a Memory by Cole Swindell
27. Fountain of Sorrow by Jackson Browne
Alternative/Synth/Misc Songs
I thought these songs were fun and something different to add to our mix. I actually don’t like the Kinks song but the words are perfect – people taking photos so you can prove something existed. This really applies in my life, because if I don’t have a photo of what I did, I will forget by next week! So that one remains on the list.
26. Send a Picture of Mother by Johnny Cash
25. Memories Are Made of This by Dean Martin
24. People Take Picture of Each Other by the Kinks
23. Wishing (If I Had a Photograph of You) by A Flock of Seagulls
Pop/Rock Songs
This genre is my favorite for listening especially the songs from the 80s. Some of these songs don’t really qualify for true memory saving inspiration, but they do remind us of the power of photos anywhere. And, the Kansas song doesn’t mention photos, portraits or memories, but sometimes we need an easy song for emotional relief!
18. Camera One by Josh Joplin Group
Honorable Mention
I think these are all great songs but they didn’t quite make the top ten list! (Except Peg by Steely Dan – so not my beat. However, those of you who like 70s music – you’ll be happy!)
16. Memory by Eileen Page from Cats
14. Photographs and Memories by Jim Croce
12. Bookends by Simon & Garfunkel
11. Open the Door, Homer by Bob Dylan
Bob Dylan sings about advice he’s received from friends. The best advice, “Take care of all your memories, for you cannot relive them.” Outstanding!
THE TOP TEN of our Spotify Photos & Memories Playlist
It’s so hard thinking about what deserves to be on the top ten. Let’s see what you think! If you’ve got ideas, thoughts or suggestions, definitely email us at contact@pixologieinc.com.
10. Photograph by Natalie Gelman
I feel like a photograph, like I’m almost real . . . I feel like a memory fading away, frozen in time like a photograph
9. Photograph by Natalie Merchant and REM
I found this photograph
Underneath the broken picture glass
Tender face of black and white
Beautiful, a haunting sight
Looked into an angel’s smile
Captivated all the while
From the hair and clothes she wore
I’d place her in between the wars
8. Photograph by Ringo Starr
Every time I see your face, it reminds of the places we used to go
7. Heaven by Warrant
I’ve got a picture of your house
And you’re standing by the door.
It’s black and white and faded,
And it’s looking pretty worn.
See the factory that I worked
Silhouetted in the back.
The memories are gray but man they’re really coming back.
6. Pictures of You by The Cure
That I almost believe that the pictures
Are all I can feel
As I ran to your heart to be near
5. Picture by Kid Rock and Sheryl Crow
(I imagine this is some guy from high school who turned me down on a date!)
I put your picture away
Sat down and cried today
I can’t look at you while I’m lying next to her
4. Photograph by Nickleback
Look at this photograph, Every time I do it makes me laugh. . . This is where I grew up
3. Kodachrome by Paul Simon
I got a Nikon camera
I love to take a photograph
So mama don’t take my Kodachrome away
2. (You Want to) Make a Memory by Bon Jovi
Just breathe, there’s no where else in life we should be. . . You want to make a memory? I dug up this old photograph. . .
And #1 is. . . . Photograph by Ed Sheeran
Hmm, we keep this love in a photograph
We made these memories for ourselves
Where our eyes are never closing
Hearts were never broken
And time’s forever frozen, still
You are definitely going to want to watch Sheeran’s music video. It is actually family video from when he was growing up. This music video has 1.1 BILLION views! Warning – grab the Kleenex box for sure! I hope you enjoy it!
