When we first met Mary Deering, it was 2015 and we were at the Charles Allis Art Museum. Preserving old photos from people who had retired from Allis Chalmers. People brought in so much more including documents, certificates. We preserved over 1,000 items that helped to tell the story of Allis Chalmers’ impact in Milwaukee. All of it spanned nearly 100 years. We preserved many stories for future generations. Click here to learn more about the day. For Mary, it was a chance to hear her father’s voice again.
While the photos and documents were fascinating to look at, Mary brought in a record. It was an audio recording of her father who had worked at Allis Chalmers. He was interviewed by Gordon Hinkley in February of 1960 during a half-time show at UW-Basketball game. She couldn’t remember when she had listened to it. After all, who has a record player anymore?
Her father had died in 1987 and she wondered if this would help the Charles Allis preserve more about Allis Chalmers. She was also curious as to what the interview was about and to hear her father’s young voice again. However, we couldn’t help Mary at the event and let her know she could bring the record to our studio. The record with its precious audio recording wasn’t something she felt she could leave for us to take.
That was back in September of 2015. We contacted her routinely over the next years, every six months or so. Often, life gets busy and our potential clients postpone having projects done. Mary appreciated the phone calls, but the time wasn’t right. The record’s audio recording of her dad’s interview would have to wait.
Ready to Get This Done
Then, in December of 2018, Mary, determined to get audio recording digitized once and for all, came into our studio with the treasured record. She then ordered the digital file to be put on a DVD so her family could listen to it as well.
Within a short time, right before Christmas, we completed the digitization of her record. For the first time in years, her dad’s voice came through along with a young Gordon Hinkley.

Mary was thrilled with the results and hearing her dad’s voice again produced many emotions. We preserved the audio recording so it was actually usable. She shared this recording with many family members resulting many happy memories recalled. As Mary says, “it is like gold.”
