A great resource for you to help your clients with old media
Occasionally, we have clients bring in old media such as undeveloped film and disk negatives. We love sending this type of work to Film Rescue International – who are the experts in working with old, old film as well as weird and unusual formats of negatives (like those old disk negatives.)
Something to keep in mind – processing these old films requires old style technology and old, rare chemicals. Film Rescue does their scanning in batches so you’ll want to watch their deadlines.
Orders go to Atlanta, Georgia for collection, paperwork and then are shipped in batches to a Canadian location for actual processing. (There is a reason why they have international in their name!)
They have many options that might seem overwhelming to look at on their website, but their staff is helpful. We have spoken to both their Atlanta and Canadian staff about our orders and have had great turnaround response to voicemail.
This type of work is not cheap, count on being charged $1 or more per image, and on shipping costs to add up. For instance, the cost for one disk is $25. If you have volume, the price can go down. No commercial scanner was ever made for
this type of negative so Film Rescue had a custom solution created and they have many years experience of getting the images off the disk. If you are going to help clients have this type of work done, you’ll want to consider the price you’ll charge.
Here’s their website to learn more. If you let them know you are a photo organizer when you place your order, they may extend you a discount.
