Heaven help us . . . when we are working with a client on digital photo organization, quite often, we have five different ways to teach the client how to do one task.
Here’s a case in point:
TASK: Copy a picture to an external hard drive
- One Way – Right click on the digital file and select copy
- Second Way – Click the digital file and hit the Control and C keys
- Third Way – Click, hold and drag the digital file to the new file
- Fourth Way – Click the file, go to Edit in menu bar, select Copy
- Fifth Way – Open the digital file, select “Save As”
- BONUS WAY, for you DOS Line editors – Enter copy myfile.txt c:\my\location
And, we haven’t addressed pasting the photo! (Why do we call it pasting anyway!)
Herein lies the problem. . . clients wanting photo organization education often come in with ingrained habits. Trying to teach them a new way may actually confuse the client more. We work hard to adapt to what our client already understands because assessing their natural computer skills (or lack thereof) makes it easier to educate them on future organization.
